Dog park tips and etiquette
Some things to keep in mind while your dog is running free:
- Always bring a leash, even if you don't plan on using it.
- Bring treats. Your dog will be more attentive, and it'll be easier to get her to come back when it's time to go. You'll make friends with the other dogs quickly too, but ask the owner before you give their dog a treat.
- Take off choke and prong collars. They can get tangled and cause injuries when dogs play rough.
- Always keep an eye on your dog. It doesn't take long for a quick dog to get out of sight, especially in brushy parks like Buena Vista and Bernal.
- Stay in control. If you can't reasonably call your dog back off-leash, put in more training before visiting an off-leash park.
- Take responsibility. If your dog gets out of hand, deal with it, and apologize if your dog gets in trouble.
- Clean up after your dog. Many parks have bag dispensers, but they're often empty. Bring your own and leave your extras behind.
- Wait on puppies. Don't bring a puppy until it's had all its shots; check with your vet.
- Take the edge off first. If your dog is the energetic type that sometimes gets into scuffles, walk him on a leash for a while before letting him loose. Burning off nervous energy makes a fight less likely.
- Know the rules. Off-leash is allowed only in designated areas. See our leash rules page.
What we bring to the park
- Quick-dry dog towel: For the sandy, wet dog you're about to put in the car.
- Waterproof car seat cover: Sand and mud stay off the back seat.
- Collapsible water bowl: Fountains aren't always working. Clips to a leash.
- Ball launcher: Longer throws without a slimy hand.
- Long training leash (15 to 30 ft): Practice recall before you trust a big open space.
- Poop bag dispenser: Park dispensers are often empty. Bring your own.
- LED collar light: Fog and early sunsets make dogs hard to spot.
